Heat Stress Doesn’t Care How Experienced You Are

Every summer, workers across agriculture, grain handling, manufacturing, feed processing, and construction hear the same thing:

The Growing Risk of Heat Exposure

Heat-related illnesses and fatalities continue to increase across the United States, particularly among outdoor and physically demanding occupations. Agricultural workers face some of the highest risks due to prolonged exposure, physical exertion, protective clothing requirements, and limited access to cooling environments. NIH research indicates agricultural workers are significantly more likely to suffer fatal heat-related illnesses than workers in most other industries.

The challenge is becoming more severe as average temperatures rise and heat waves become more frequent and prolonged. EPA researchers continue to warn that the number of unsafe workdays for outdoor workers will increase substantially in the coming decades.

But heat stress isn’t limited to outdoor work.

Grain elevators, flour mills, feed mills, processing facilities, maintenance shops, and manufacturing plants can all create dangerous indoor heat conditions through equipment, poor airflow, confined spaces, and process heat loads. Heat Stress Is More Than Heat Stroke

When people think of heat illness, they often jump directly to heat stroke.

Heat stroke is the emergency everyone fears, but it is only the final stage in a progression that often begins hours earlier.

Common heat-related illnesses include:

  • Heat rash
  • Heat cramps
  • Heat syncope (fainting)
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Heat stroke

Symptoms may include:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Loss of coordination

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can quickly become fatal if immediate treatment is not provided.

Experience Doesn’t Make You Immune

One of the most dangerous assumptions in industry is: “I’ve worked in this heat for 20 years.”

“Heat doesn’t care how long you’ve worked here, what your job title is, or how tough you think you are. Heat stress affects the body’s ability to cool itself, and once that process starts failing, experience doesn’t matter nearly as much as preparation. New employees, seasonal workers, and employees returning from vacations face elevated risks because their bodies have not acclimatized to working in high temperatures. The CDC recommends allowing workers time to gradually adapt to heat over several days rather than immediately assigning full workloads in hot conditions.

The Four Controls That Prevent Most Heat Illnesses

Heat stress prevention can be tackled with four simple priorities:

1. Water

Workers should have immediate access to cool drinking water and should drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until they feel thirsty. Thirst is a lagging indicator of dehydration.

2. Rest

As temperatures and humidity rise, work-rest schedules become increasingly important. Short recovery periods often prevent incidents that hours of lost productivity cannot fix later.

3. Shade or Cooling Areas

Whether it’s an air-conditioned break room, a shaded structure, or a cooled vehicle, workers need a place where their body temperature can recover.

4. Acclimatization

The body adapts to heat over time. New employees and returning workers should gradually increase exposure over a period of several days.

Supervisors Are the First Line of Defense

Heat stress often impairs judgment before physical symptoms become obvious. Workers may not recognize their own symptoms, making supervisors and coworkers critical components of prevention programs.

Leaders should watch for:

  • Slowed response times
  • Confusion
  • Irritability
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Poor decisions
  • Stumbling or coordination issues

If an employee begins exhibiting these symptoms, act immediately. A lot of heat incidents happen because everyone assumes someone else is paying attention. Heat safety works best when crews look out for each other.
